Call to action – We are fed up! Protest on 17 January 2026

Take a stand! For sustainable agriculture worldwide

We live in a system where the agricultural industry profits while small-scale and organic farming loses.

On the one hand, there are billions in profits for agrochemical companies, patents on seeds and investors speculating on farmland. The transition of livestock farming is stalling – and there is no mandatory and comprehensive labelling of animal welfare standards, even though the majority of the population in Germany is in favour of more transparency. Industrialised animal farming is further exacerbating the climate crisis: the current food system is responsible for more than a third of global greenhouse gas emissions. At the same time, the agricultural industry relies on genetic engineering and simplified pesticide approvals – thereby endangering our natural resources.

On the other hand, there are farmers who fear for their economic livelihood because the food industry and retailers dictate the prices. Small-scale farms continue to disappear at an alarming rate: around 2,600 farms shut every year. The situation is similarly dramatic in food trades, for example for bakeries. At the same time, food in Germany now costs around 30 per cent more than in 2021. Millions of people cannot afford healthy food, and the queues at food banks are getting longer and longer. Worldwide, 2.3 billion people do not have enough to eat – and more than 670 million people suffer from acute hunger.

This system harms people, animals and nature – and exacerbates the climate crisis.

And what is the German government doing?

It is giving in to the interests of agricultural corporations. It is cutting subsidies for the transformation of livestock housing and the higher costs of better livestock farming. At the same time, the introduction of a state label for animal products is delayed. In doing so, it is preventing both transparency for consumers and planning security for farmers – while substandard meat continues to be produced on a massive scale.

It bends to the will of the industrial and chemical lobby. It is sacrificing the protection of our drinking water by rushing through the abolition of regulations designed to prevent the over-fertilization of our soil. When it talks about reducing bureaucracy and promoting competitiveness, it means cutting back on climate, environmental and animal protection – and stands by as necessary subsidies are cut in the EU's agricultural policy.

It ducks away when it comes to effective measures to combat hunger worldwide. Instead, it cuts funding for development aid and remains inactive when people are denied access to land and food. At the same time, it promotes bilateral trade agreements such as the EU-Mercosur Agreement, which causes deforestation, exploitation and environmental destruction in countries of the Global South.

We are fed up! Agriculture Minister Rainer and the federal government must take a stand, now!

We demand:

  • Farms instead of agribusiness! Agricultural subsidies only for smaller-scale and more ecological farms – not for factory farms and agribusiness corporations.
  • Transparency instead of deception! Labelling of farming conditions and genetic engineering – on all food products, whether in stores, restaurants or catering.
  • Climate, environmental and animal protection instead of lobby interests! No dismantling of standards, but investment in sustainable agriculture.
  • Justice instead of corporate power! Fair prices for consumers and producers – an end to price dictates by food retailers.
  • Solidarity instead of division! More money for development aid and overcoming hunger – for a socially just agricultural transition worldwide.

Let's take to the streets together

Farmers and consumers, urban and rural, organic and conventional, animal owners and vegans: Join the ‘We’re fed up!’ protest!
